PRACTICAL THINGS TO PROACTIVELY DO TO FIND GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES; PEOPLE CAN EASILY DO THESE THINGS.
- Make friends with people from different departments in school and people who understand things differently from you. You’ll broaden your network and they’ll teach you things you never knew that you never knew. Anthony used to tell me many things about coding and tech life; I didn’t understand everything but I enjoyed the conversations.
- If you want to work with someone or a company that won’t hire you because you lack skills, etc., find someone in the organization, message them on LinkedIn, or email them and offer to volunteer or do an internship. Mention the areas in which you wish to work. Use the marketing “7-3-3 rule” to follow up on messages. If you’re really serious about it, follow up in 7 days if they don’t respond, then send another follow-up in 3 days to remind them (if they don’t respond). It’s optional to follow up a final time after 3 more days or move on.
- If you’re unsure what to do career-wise, volunteer far and wide. If it doesn’t help you know what you want, it’ll help you know what you don’t want to do and the kind of people you don’t want to work with.
- YouTube is wonderful for learning things for free.
